I attached rubber bands to holes I drilled in the bread and wore it as a nose. It looked exactly like a lion's nose. One night, on an unlit Mexican Pacific coast highway, girlfriend derelict in keeping me awake, snoring next to me, I dozed off. Old VW bus--my face inches from the windshield--drifts into the opposite lane, as though by a gentle, guiding hand. The highway is deserted. But I jerk awake--and as I begin to return to the right lane, I see it: a great black steer that I would have plowed into in the misaimed headlight Jalisco night. The feel of the angel's hands were warm on the steering wheel. We found a motel a few hours later, me, the girlfriend and the angel.
