We, as readers know that the words startling and informing will only related to fact and truth. No one will read something which is not informative and not "true". Thoreau is right when he used the word "startling", because truth can be startling for people who live in illusionary foundation of life, who being deceived by their own foolishness. Walden is a book of a truth seeker's experience by learning and experiencing, by dealing with the fact and reality. In Walden, Nature become the guru or a ladder to achieve a higher level of living. To live harmoniously with nature means to live simple and free or independent (being self-sufficient). That kind mode of living will sharpen your faculties and potentials and thus elevate your living into a higher level of living. I posted this on 30 April 2009

Etc. - what is Thoreau's most inspiring saying in Walden?

Walden is like a second Koran for me. I've been inspired and encouraged by Thoreau's account of his daily life which also symbolized his spiritual- transcendental journey. One of my favorite quote is: "Not till we are lost - in others words, not till we have lost the world - do we begin to find ourselves, and realise where we are, and the infinite extent of our relations" (walden-the village) so, tell me what is your favorite quote in Walden?

Walden - Walden--fifth part

yes, you are right. Thoreau used a metaphor in describing life is like controlling a shipping company. in life, you should have a destination (a purpose), you should know where to start, you should know what you can do, what you must learn in order to achieve your goals. just like in shipping as thoreau stated, that in shipping navigation, updating the chart and maps are a must. Like in shipping company, life is also a journey, a voyage that full of storm and thunder, and you may "strand your vessell" or sink to the bottom of the sea, if you can't read "map" and use "compass" .
